About Seishinkan Iaido
The head (Kancho) of Seishinkan Iaido, Dr Glenn Agou Stockwell, is the first non-Japanese in history to receive the rank of 8th Dan from the Dai Nihon Iaido Renmei (All Japan Iaido Federation), having completed all requirements including the Japanese written examination. He was trained directly by Meishinkan’s Yasuyoshi Kimura (Hanshi 10th Dan) (範士, translated as “Grand Master”) in Osaka. Seishinkan Iaido was started in January 1993 by Glenn Stockwell, originally as a subsidiary of the Meishinkan Dojo, until Kimura Kancho’s death in January, 1999. Seishinkan practises the waza (forms) in exactly the same way that they were taught by Kimura Kancho, with the objective of preserving the art.
He was awarded the rank of Kyoshi (教士, translated as “High Master”) in 2016 before grading to 8th Dan in 2022. He was granted the kengo (iaido name) of “Agou” (阿豪) in 2022 by the 24th Soke of Musou Jikiden Eishinryu, Aseisai Fukushima (Hanshi 10th Dan) of the Agonokai (阿号之会), which is dedicated to the preservation of the style.
Seishinkan was established as the first division of the Renmei based outside of Japan, initially as the Australia Shibu (Australian Division) and then later as the Seishinkan Shibu as the membership became more international. Seishinkan now operates as six separate Shibu, with the Seishinkan Brisbane Shibu, Seishinkan Gold Coast Shibu, Seishinkan Sydney Shibu, Seishinkan Melbourne Shibu in Australia, the Seishinkan Tokyo Shibu in Japan, and the Seishinkan Shibu remaining as the base for the dojos in other regions such as the USA and Poland. Regardless of where they are based, all students of Seishinkan are able to train at any of the Seishinkan dojos in the world and to compete in the Dai Nihon Iaido Renmei Kyoto National Iaido Championships each year.
